Steel Deck

Steel deck is a structural building product used in roof and floor applications that can hold various types of loads.

It is manufactured by roll forming steel coils into various corrugated shapes depending on the application. This process takes advantage of geometry to maximize the capabilities of the steel in order to support various loads over different spans, such as gravity, uplift, and lateral loads (diaphragm shear) applied to the building.

Modifications can also be made to steel deck to achieve different results for a project such as adding embossments for composite action with concrete, perforating the deck and adding fiberglass batts for acoustics, or welding a flat plate on the bottom of the corrugated profile for appearance from below.

CSC produces a variety of steel deck options, available in specifications that are customizable, depending on what your project needs. As a Steel Deck Institute (SDI) member company, we design and manufacture to SDI standards. We offer a variety of products including roof deck, composite deck, various types of architectural deck, and many more options for exactly what you need, when you need it.

Types of Steel Deck

STEEL ROOF DECK

Roof deck is used to enclose the top of a building while allowing for the final roof to be fastened above. Using roof deck is an efficient way of supporting roof loads, as this type of deck can support gravity loads, wind uplift loads, and diaphragm shear loads. Roof deck also serves as a lateral stabilizer for the roof framing members and can be a critical component of the load path for diaphragm shear. It is available in a variety of gages, most commonly 22 thru 16 gage, with numerous finish options depending on the needs of the specific project.

COMPOSITE FLOOR DECK

Composite floor deck is used for floor applications in buildings and is a critical structural element of the floor slab. The deck is installed over the supports and serves as both a working platform during construction and a permanent form for the wet concrete. Additionally, embossments in the webs of the composite deck create mechanical bond with the concrete that combined with chemical bond between the steel and concrete result in composite action between the two materials. Composite action allows for the deck to serve as the permanent tensile reinforcement for the slab. Common gages for composite deck range from 22 thru 16 gage.

FORM DECK

Form deck, otherwise known as non-composite floor deck, is used for floor applications in buildings and serves as both a working platform and stay-in-place form for the wet concrete. It does not have embossments so it does not act compositely with the concrete. It is often used for lighter applications where wire mesh serves as the tensile reinforcement. However, it is also used for applications of dynamic loading or very thick slabs where the designer wants rebar to be used for slab reinforcement rather than rely on composite action between the deck and concrete. Common gage for form deck range from 28 thru 16 gage.

CELLULAR ROOF DECK

Cellular roof deck offers the same capabilities as roof deck with the added benefits of increased load capacity, increased span capabilities, and improved appearance of the underside of the deck. A flat liner panel is attached to the bottom side of the deck to make the flutes into cells, giving the deck its name. The liner panel typically has stiffeners to minimize oil canning the bottom sheet can experience. Cellular deck can be used to resist the same types of loads as standard roof deck, however, it offers a more architecturally-pleasing flat ceiling from the underside given the addition of the flat liner panel. Common gages range from 20/20 to 16/16 gage.

CELLULAR COMPOSITE FLOOR DECK

Cellular composite deck is similar to composite deck with the added benefits of increased load capacity, increased span capabilities, and improved appearance of the underside of the deck. A flat liner panel is attached to the bottom side of the deck to make the flutes into cells giving the deck its name. The liner panel typically has stiffeners to prevent oil canning in the flat sheet. Like composite deck, this deck serves as a working platform during construction, is a permanent form for the wet concrete, and will work compositely with the concrete to be the tensile steel for the final slab. However, it also offers a more architecturally pleasing flat ceiling from the underside given the addition of the flat liner panel. Common gages range from 20/20 to 16/16 gage.

ACOUSTICAL DECK

Many types of roof and composite deck are also offered as acoustical options. The primary purpose of acoustical deck is to absorb sound and prevent echoes within the space below. To accomplish this, the deck is perforated on the exposed side of the deck, allowing sound to pass through perforations and be absorbed by fiberglass batts. Acoustical deck is offered in two options: the standard version has simple perforations in the side walls of the flutes and fiberglass batts in the low flutes, and the cellular version has perforations in the bottom liner panel and fiberglass batts in the cells. Acoustical performance varies depending on the type of deck and configuration of the perforations.

LONG SPAN DECK

Long span deck is roof deck that takes advantage of a deeper geometry for the specific purpose of spanning long distances. Designed to cover distances up to 40 feet, long span deck is more efficient at resisting loads over long distances than standard roof deck. This deck can support gravity loads, wind uplift loads, and diaphragm shear loads and is used to stabilize the roof framing members, carrying the diaphragm shear through its supporting fasteners. For ease of installation and transportation, standard long span deck is provided in single flute sheets as it is typically heavier than standard deck. Standard gages range from 18 thru 10 gage.

REVEAL SERIES DECK

Reveal Series deck is an architectural deck used in both roof and floor applications. Its flutes are shaped like dovetails allowing for a greater concentration of steel within the deck profile and also an aesthetically pleasing, plank-like look from the underside. For roof applications, it can span longer distances or carry heavier loads while at the same time offering a finished ceiling from the underside. For floor deck applications, the wide low flutes allow for maximizing concrete volume to keep slabs as thin as possible from both a load carrying and fire rating perspective. When used with concrete, it does bond with the concrete as a composite deck. The acoustical versions of the product line offer superior acoustic performance to other deck types considering the wide flat perforated bottom flutes are created to optimally absorb sound. Common gages are 20 thru 16 gage. A variety of finishes are offered since it is often used as a finished ceiling.
